This is the only time Grell physically appears in the manga, there are a couple other references to him during the Circus Arc and I do hope he comes back in the manga. I loved the Jack the Ripper arc and it was pretty much spot on in the anime save for a few lines of dialogue from the manga I would have preferred be kept in. As for Grell in his true form, this is where my own preferences for Grell come in. He did a good job on the accent (save for one part when speaking to Sebastian when he stumbled a little) and was nicely proper and whiny at the same time. Starting with Butler Grell: he was perfect. I was absolutely blown away by his performance in all aspects. From what I've been able to find on him, he's a recent college graduate who has done some stage work. I am going to start this with my absolute favorite character and the one I was most anxious to hear dubbed:ĭaniel Fredrick is a brand new voice actor. I welcome intelligent discussion, but do not make this into a bitch fest and comments outright putting me down for my opinions will be deleted: I am really not kidding about this. I am going to take a more critical approach with the performances and these opinions are mine alone. At this point it seems to me that there are a lot of people who are bashing it because it's the cool thing to do and I've heard few people who will take an honest critical approach with it and not dismiss it out of the gate and find things to make fun of. I am aware that a lot of people have been very critical of the Kuro dub. I am going to go over my thoughts on this character by character including first impressions. I will weigh the dub with this in mind as well. My preferences for the series are different from that of a lot of people and there are certain characters I prefer to see a certain way and they're portrayed differently in the anime (there's one huge example of this I'll get to soon). I personally prefer the manga for many reasons so I was also rewatching the series dubbed with this in mind. Having seen all of the anime and being up to date on the manga, I have become very critical of the anime. I was able to keep up with the original Kuro voices as there were some amazing performances (Daisuke Ono, Jun Fukuyama, and Maaya Sakamoto especially stick out for me). I have nothing against seiyu or the Japanese language, but I tend to understand something better when I'm hearing it in my language. However, going into this, Kuroshitsuji was probably the first time I really liked the Japanese voices. But then most of the anime I've seen is newer anime and not kids anime either, yes I'm aware of how bad older dubs can be (I cringe to hear Motoko in the Ghost in the Shell movie, but they got a better actor for SAC, IMHO) and I'll take your word for it on 4Kids. I tend to not be all that critical of English performances, in fact I usually don't find a lot of reason to criticize the English dub unless it's glaringly bad. I personally prefer dubs over subs, if you've been following me long enough you've probably heard me say this a billion times but it bears repeating. Okay, before I start I just need to say a few things: I had watched the first four episodes dubbed when they were on YouTube and before that heard some previews from NYAF. I just bought the DVD of Season 1, Part 1 of Kuroshitsuji (aka Black Butler), grandma's $50 from Christmas went to very good use.
